It’s the end of a very eventful, topsy-turvy month. There were a lot of things that didn’t go the way I wanted them to and I felt unhinged for at least half of the month. I sought different books to help ground me but instead of keeping me “still,” they expanded me and gave me other perspectives.
As I stand here, looking back and reflecting on what has been, I realize that all things happen for a reason. Everything has its purpose. I may not know what it is yet but amidst the chaos, I just need to set aside some time to be still and to witness what is. Like what Shakespeare said, “Nothing is either good or bad.. but thinking makes it so,” I am reminded that it’s all about perspectives.
I don’t think that things are good or bad in themselves, except in relation to our needs and how we use them. But if I had to choose, I would say that, given they exist, they must be good. In the universal design of creation, it’s possible that a lot of things that happen have a meaning we will haven’t understood.
Could it be that weeds grow so that we have to pull them up, and so avoid becoming lazy?
Might there be pain in the world so that we can love and value our happiness?
Does hate perhaps exist so that we can experience the spiritual fulfillment of forgiveness?
The truth is that without difficulties along the way, it would be impossible to make progress as human beings and discover our true nature. It is at really critical moments that the best of us comes to light.
– A. G. Roemmers, “The Return of the Young Prince”
As I flip to the next page of this particular calendar, I asked myself: Have I succeeded in elevating my standards? The answer: I don’t know.. but I do know I see things with more clarity nowadays and this allows me to choose more mindfully and make more purposeful decisions. Maybe “elevating standards” isn’t just about being “better than the rest.” Maybe it has more to do with seeing things as a whole and learning to respond to the needs of the present moment.
We’re entering the last two months of the year. There are still a lot of gems left to be uncovered.
Be awake. Be open. Be.
